FAQ
Questions about Dreamr, answered plainly
Network shares
Does Android TV support NFS?
Android TV and Google TV can't mount NFS shares by themselves. Dreamr includes its own NFSv4 client, so it reads NFS exports from TrueNAS, Unraid, OpenMediaVault or Linux without root and without changing the TV's system settings.
Can I use my Synology or QNAP photos as the TV screensaver?
Yes. Dreamr connects to the NAS over SMB, the same protocol Windows uses for shared folders, and plays a folder of your choice. You don't need Synology Photos, QuMagie or a DLNA server.
What happens when the NAS is asleep or offline?
Dreamr retries in the background and starts the slideshow when the share comes back. A NAS that spins its disks down usually wakes on the first request.
Does it need the internet?
Photos only travel over your home network. Only the optional weather overlay uses the internet.
Devices and photos
Which TVs and streamers does it run on?
Any Android TV or Google TV device with Google Play, including Nvidia Shield, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, and Sony, TCL, Hisense and Philips TVs.
How do I set Dreamr as the screensaver on Google TV?
Google TV only lists Google's own Ambient mode in Settings, so third-party screensavers are set with one ADB command from a computer. Turn on developer options and network debugging on the TV, connect with adb connect <tv-ip>, then run the command below. On Android TV (e.g. Nvidia Shield), use Settings › Device Preferences › Screen saver instead.
adb shell settings put secure screensaver_components uk.co.shogunsoftware.dreamr/.PhotoDreamService
Which photo formats work?
JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP on every TV, plus iPhone HEIC photos on Android 9 or later and AVIF on Android 12 or later. RAW and TIFF files are skipped.
Can it shuffle without repeating?
Yes. Shuffle shows every photo once before any repeats, and it remembers its place between screensaver sessions.
Privacy
Does Dreamr upload my photos?
No. Photos are read from your share and shown on the TV. They aren't uploaded anywhere, and the share password is encrypted in the TV's Android Keystore.
